Kunming farmer

China

Kunming is one of those new Chinese cities that are erasing the surrounding villages and killing the farming culture.

Yet many old people are not used to big city life and desperately try to hang on to their traditional way of life, farming any piece of available land, even amongst the buildings. One evening I met this farmer coming back from his fields. He was astonished to meet a foreigner and very happy that someone was interested in his way of life.

As for so many others, the new China replaced his old village home, but not, at least for now, his lifestyle.
